I will be attending next year's 2016 International Left Hand Path Consortium. A gathering of followers and practitioners of various LHP traditions, I'll be showing mask works and possibly some paintings. All of the mask works on display will be for sale as well. I guess this seems like a nice time to say the Lords of The Left Hand Path series will getting it's first new release in some time next month. on April 11..look that date up for a clue. back from the dead blog world

Been a few centuries since the last post here. I'm shooting to have a better outreach on this thing this year. There are several new projects already unleashed and coming soon on the site. At the end of 2014, the first in a series of masks inspired and based on the writings of HP Lovecraft was released in the form of Cthulhu! He is based *heavily* on the original 1934 sketch that HPL did of the Elder God. I did take small bits of artistic license by adding certain sea creatures elements into him, but I've stayed as close to HPL's original design as possible. He is listed in the shop currently, but I've still got to get around to adding new pics of a couple paint variations available. More coming soon among them is Nyarlathotep, Shub Niggurath and a mask of HPL himself! Also working on a couple of collaborative efforts recently as well, the first between a Yokohama Japan's Mas!Store in the form of a Halloween mask of one their shirt designs. No progress pic to throw out there at this moment, but I'll be posting something up soon. The other is another mask based on a shirt design, this time between Death Rays Clothing, Geoff Kresge (ex Tiger Army, AFI, etc) and Screwbiter. This first mask is the PsychoBat and slated to be one of a few releases in conjunction with the two of them. He'll be an open ended edition price TBA and available in two color schemes but more on that as everything is finalized! And last, the Thrall mask has been re-released for all of you who have asked over the years! Like last time, he glows in the dark and is available in half or full head versions. This one will also feature a blood spatter paint finish upon request, so go get one before this one is gone! That's about it for now, more to follow!

RxIxP Hr Giger

I remember where I was and exactly what I was doing when I received news of the passing of one of my heroes. Anton LaVey, Johnny Cash, and a host of others. I could tell you what I was doing each of those times. And this morning was no different when I read the first news of the passing of probably the most important and influential figures in my life, HR Giger. I never actually met the man, though we did share a couple mutual friends, but like when Dr. LaVey and Cash moved on, I cannot help but feel like a small part of me died this morning when I read that. My first exposure to his work (and virtually everyone else’s as well) was seeing the film Alien. He conjured up that unforgettable demon from somewhere deep inside his mind and unleashed it upon us all, and for me it was love at first sight. It wasn’t until many years later when I picked up a copy of Heavy Metal magazine in Renegade Comics and saw the Morpheus ad for his signed prints and books. I got the shop’s owner Ed to order for me Giger’s Necronomicon, and paid for it over months using school lunch money and store credit earned by filling subscription boxes and back issues. The day I split open the shrink wrap, similar to opening a dusty, old grimoire of black magic my life was changed forever. The mad genius, unashamed perversity, and nightmarish artistry left such a deep burn in my mind that I haven’t created a thing since where I didn’t ask myself “If Giger were doing this, how would he approach it?” Like anyone who creates and has a central person who inspired them I have dabbled in the Biomechanical style he created, but never really attempted to seriously pursue it. Because everyone who has ever tried only ends looking like a Giger hack to me. Though I know he didn’t actually invent it, as far as I’m concerned HR Giger invented the art of painting with an airbrush. I have carried his influence on me as best I can and applied it to whatever I’m working on. While compiling ideas and sketches and reference for anything I’m working on, I pour through his work for additional inspiration. He left us all an eternal well of work to marvel at and be spellbound by. An artist I was friends with a few years ago who knew Giger did a series of three portraits of him. Giger kept his favorite of the series, and the other two ended up in the collections of my pal Chris X and myself. That along with the many books and signed prints of his amazing work are what I have to enjoy and I will make sure to take a few extra looks at them tonight. Rest In Peace, Hans Reudi Giger. You will forever be missed.

Papa Emeritus II

it's been a long, long time in the making but screwbiter is mondo proud to bring the Official Papa Emeritus II mask! Papa II is the current incarnation of frontman for Swedish band Ghost (or as they are known trademark wise in the states "Ghost B.C."). sculpted by myself pulling inspiration from both the actual mask used in live performance and album artwork, this bad boy is limited to 250 pieces world wide and available NOW in the mask shop! each piece is hand numbered, and 13 specially selected numbers (of occult significance) will be known as "Ghostly Papas" and they feature a glow in the dark skull finish. Demand is expected to be high, and I anticipate many sleepless nights in the shop!

goin to The Blumeys

I just got word today the the play I did prosthesis for back in February, "Beauty & The Beast" has been nominated for several awards (including best makeup design) in the 2013 NC Blumenthal Arts awards "The Blumeys". The actor I did the key makeup on has been nominated in the best actor category and will be performing a couple of numbers in full Beast makeup, so I've once again been contracted by the school to handle the gig and attend the ceremonies with the cast & crew on May 19th. nice way to cap off the day I think!

project news

The secret project I've been mentioning for a while is almost complete! I just sent images of the final sculpt for approval and it looks like we're good to go, so I'll post a little teaser here: I will be doing final texturing and tweaking this week then she goes to mold. work will begin on her eyes and base/nameplate this week as well, then she'll be unleashed on an unsuspecting human world! Also working on a second secret project that I've been at for a while it seems, but can't report much on that other than to say the sculpt it almost complete and I will be submitting it as well. Work continues on the Anton LaVey bust as well, and hope to have something on that soon as well. Last, it's not official as of yet but plans are in the works to be a part of MaskFest this year in Indiana. More news on that as it surfaces. That's all for now!

Making the beast and other news

I've been working all week on a production of Disney's version of Beauty and The Beast in Charlotte for Covenant Day School. I've been hired to do the prosthetics for the Beast character, and it's been pretty fun. I've been involved in plays before and enjoyed them, it's been along time though. I fortunately got used to the frenetic backstage pace that I'd long forgotten. It runs the rest of the week and two shows Saturday. I'll post pics when I can get a hold of some. I've been working as well on the secret mask project and hope to have it finished and submitted for likeness approval soon. I have the base ready and will be sculpting it's name plate soon too, expect it to be released in the next month or so. April 11 will also see the return of the Lords of The Left Hand Path series as well, details on that forthcoming. until next time!

So I rolled on over to the site of band Bloody Hammers and before I could get a chance to check out the music, saw a familiar site indeed. It turns out the Lords of The Left Hand Path series mask Baphomet is on their cd cover! music is pretty cool to boot, head on over there and check it out! the pic itself:

not sure who actually purchased the mask, but I'm thinking I'll have to shoot em an email thanking them for that. Pretty cool way to cap off the night.

checking in from the great beyond

This might be the longest I've gone with no updates...or maybe not. It's been pretty busy here, and well the blog thing seems to slip my mind..A LOT. I'm also in the final stages of becoming a home owner, so that has me tied up most of the time ...and drinking a ton more than I normally do hahaha. I've been really getting hammered with commission requests lately, been doing work for other Indy Wrestlers in the area making to the ring costumes. I'm sure it doesn't hurt that I make my own masks and gear to use in shows, they get to see the gear in action. Taken on some other jobs for people looking to intensify their Haunted House/Trail, etc costumes as well. All rewarding work, but I recently landed a license to produce a limited edition series of one of horror's most enduring cult icons. I can't speak publicly on who it is just yet, but it's one that is very close to my black heart, perhaps the most personally important piece I have ever done. I'm anticipating a Halloween release, so you lil monsters won't have to wait much longer! There'll be a few new mask pieces in addition to that hopefully soon enough, and the release of some new items I'm adding to the catalog. For you all Rat Rodders out there, resin shifter heads! The line will be kicking off with a version of Clint Mephisto and a Shrunken head, followed by a super secret, super cool collaboration. It's gonna be a cool next few months!

Mad Monster Party

Wifey and I attended the Mad Monster Party last weekend (or weekend before as of this writing), and while Screwbiter Studios wasn't present as a vendor, we did do some shopping, got a couple signatures and did some networking. Up at the top of the list for me was to get the Creature From The Black Lagoon mask that I produced signed by Ricou Browning. For those unaware (shame on you if you are!), Mr. Browning portrayed the Gill Man in all of the underwater scenes in the original film. I presented him with the mask and he spent a few moments looking it over which made me a tad nervous. But to my pleasure he told me he liked it and was accurate to what he wore. As my version was never intended to have the bobcat eyes so many other versions have, I wanted to know what he wore over his own eyes in the film. None of the stills I used to sculpt mine had eyes in them, so this was a burning question. According to him, he initially wore swimming goggles underneath the mask but had almost zero visibility. So he took them off and filmed all of the film's underwater sequences with NO eye protection whatsoever. I told him that was bad ass, and he chuckled. I've always wondered what one of the "Gill Men" would think of my creation and I got a great review, can't ask for much more!

One of the other items high on my list was to meet James Hong, who played David Lo-Pan in one of my top ten of all time, "Big Trouble In Little China". His signature was needed on my theatrical one sheet poster, so I was anxious to get that key autograph for the collection. He did not disappoint, arriving to the signing table in Lo-Pan regalia! then I took the opportunity for a pic with him. I threw the Chang Sing hand sign from the film (cause I'm a geek you see) but that threw off the camera as some of it is a tad blurry :/ but here we are:

We did a bit more shopping throughout the day, passed out a ton of cards and fliers, met up with our friends Gwen and Jason and toured the con with them. Upon returning to the main floor, we ran into my old friends Henry and his wife Jennifer, which was a nice surprise. I've been back in NC three years and not seen either of them once so I was happy about that. Around 5 or so we ducked off into the bar for some drinks with a fellow wrestler friend of mine, Zane Riley and then we ducked out to hit uptown Charlotte for more drunken debauchery. On the way out, wifey got her picture snapped in front of the legendary car "Christine" from the John Carpenter classic:

It was kinda funny listening to everyone we ran into talk about how they'd never seen anything like this before. Charlotte has never gotten a proper horror convention, but I've been travelling to them since the 90's and while it's always fun for me, I'm not starstruck at all or phased anymore. Reportedly it went over well, and the promoters have already booked for next year so it looks like Charlotte is finally on the horror con map!

Krampus!

forces beyond my control prevented it's completion today, but in honor of Krampusnacht, here is the completed sculpture for the newest piece in the Lords of The Left Hand Path series, Krampus! He will be cast in rigid neoprene, with hand laid hair, wearable with a couple different finish options, and wall-hangable. Edition size will be 33 signed/numbered pieces only! $125 plus shipping. I'm taking preorders via paypal now, molds will be finished and pieces run beginning in the next week or so. Official announcement via the usual channels will begin shortly!

News of a Not So Random Sort..but Maybe.

The Iron Maiden Tribute Band I'd been working for, "Aces High" has officially secured me as their exclusive prop and costume maker for their live set. I shipped off the first of these long term collaborative efforts yesterday, a mask of legendary Maiden mascot Eddie and a pair of monster forearm gloves. These will be worn on stage during the live set and will be featured this weekend at their Halloween show. If you're in the Vegas area, check 'em out! Video and pics will be posted soon.

I'm in the midst of pre production on a short film starring my daughter entitled "Charlotte's Heart". She will be playing a vampire child and I think is more excited about it than I am. I plan to be filming soon once the set has been completed. My recently completed screenplay for another short "Houseguest" will be moving to the forefront again soon as well. In other film news, the documentary on the Millennium Wrestling Federation "Fake It So Real" will be playing it's first international festival soon. Response has been incredible, we are all pretty excited to see it's still going strong. The North Carolina premiere of the film will be in Wilmington, NC on Nov 13th. I don't think we will be performing after the film, as far as I know a ring has not been secured. Once it has been set in stone, more info will be posted.

Speaking of MWF, we are on the road to our last big card of the year. The 11th annual "Brawl Games" taking place Saturday November 26th. If you are in the Lincoln/Gaston NC area, do not miss this show! We've been called the very definition of love for the wrestling business, come find out why!

Lastly, The Lords of The Left Hand Path series will see it's long delayed return next month. In anticipation of the "christ-mess" season, I will be unleashing Krampus upon the world! Final details on the design are being hammered out now and sculpting begins in the coming days. I'm currently working on a new release as well that will be finished soon. No reveal yet, but Ghostbusters fans will get a kick out of it...

Corners wrapped and other news

After pretty much spending a good chunk of the last month in Asheville, NC filming "Corners" for Down Poor Pictures I can now report filming has finished! It was definitely a trying shoot, including a 10 ft fall through the finale's set by yours truly. Fortunately, I came out with only some ugly road rash looking scrapes and a really sore back. We wrapped last week and after another horrible ride home courtesy of the blown transmission in my car, I am back home. Not sure when the film will be released, but when I know the news will be certainly broadcast here.

In other news, I have recently obtained a physical location in Gastonia, NC as part of the Gaston Arts Guild. Essentially this means, Screwbiter has a physical shop now and some of my works will be available for purchase there for those who are locals. You around the world, fear not though, the web store is not closing!

This obviously lends itself to diving headlong back into work! With major projects upcoming as well as the next mask releases, it is going to be a really busy time for me. I'm pretty excited about it, so I'm jumpin in full on. Last, if you are in the Lincolnton, NC area this week come out Saturday night Sept 10th for a night of MWF Wrestling!
